NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Those powerful winds could spell disaster for decorations meant to spread holiday cheer.

In any weather and even on holidays, the Dominion Energy Garden of Lights at the Norfolk Botanical Garden is open to the public, and this year, there are over a million lights for the 30th anniversary.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden has a crew that walks around to make sure all the lights that hang from the trees to the frame pieces stay upright, even if it’s as windy as it was Thursday. The crew also goes around to untangle any lights or fix anything that has fallen or no longer lights up.

They say you don’t need a pro to keep holiday inflatables or lights up.

So for those at home, the senior manager for the Garden of Lights said zip ties and extra wire on the ground will help you keep your holiday decor up.

“Hopefully, the ground is soft in most places, but not too soft so that the stakes and everything can go into the ground,” said Rachel Elder, senior manager for the Garden of Lights. “Again, your local hardware store and places like that will have a lot of those options.”

10 On Your Side went into neighborhoods and asked one person how they keep their big inflatables up during the year.

They said a mallet is your best bet.
