NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After a flurry of community support, Veda Fulford’s Norfolk home is on the mend, and she’s getting the help she needs.
10 On Your Side has been highlighting Fulford’s story, from the time a pipe burst in her 105-year-old home, to having her home restored and made livable again.
“I would definitely say that everybody that came together, it was due to WAVY10 news,” said Fulford, a 38-year-old mother of three. “They have been a blessing, an angel to me and my family and we will be back together soon after all this is over with.”
10 On Your Side’s Regina Mobley first brought you the story Monday. After a pipe burst in Veda Fulford’s house, she had her home red tagged by the city of Norfolk — meaning no running water or heat in her home.
The issues she had been having with her home have been exacerbated by her health issues, as Fulford is a double-amputee and developed sepsis following spinal cord surgery in October. Her husband, Rico Fulford, has been recovering from a car accident, and her children have been staying with family members.
“It would drop to like 40 or 30 (degrees) in here,” Fulford said. “As you see, I got a lot of blankets on my bed and I started noticing I was getting like a cold, but I would just keep drinking hot coffee, and I would just stay under the blankets. My mother-in-law gave me a small heater as well.”
In good news for the Fulford family, Mr. Comfort Heating and Cooling came by and was able to restore the home’s heat.
“Throughout my diagnosis of the system, I came upon some melted off high voltage electrical wires inside the supplemental heater,” said Chris Coffey, a service technician for Mr. Comfort Heating and Cooling. “Quick repair, reconnected, restriped new wire. At this point we’re at the process of checking it out and making sure it’s working at full capacity. And if so, I shouldn’t have a problem heating the home.”
As a result of the conditions, Fulford’s children are staying with a family member.
The family is grateful for all the community’s support right before the holiday.
“I’m feeling blessed because it could have truly taken a little bit longer and I’m thankful for everybody that helped pitched in and put together a team to try to help me and my family before Christmas,” Fulford said.
Said Coffey: “To be able to help someone in her need at this time of the year, it’s feels really good to help them out. It’s an older system. It is what it is, but I believe she’ll be able to get through the holiday season and be warm in her home.”
An electrician completed the inspection.
Now the city can go back and remove the red tag, if everything is safe.
