BLOG: Coldest wind chill of the season arrives Friday

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — It’s going to be a COLD morning for us across Tidewater, almost cold enough where small ponds could start to see ice form on them. In Minnesota, where I grew up, the term used might be “Uffda” for the expression we’d have for the approaching cold wind chills.

Friday will be a windy and cold day for us, bundle up all day with wind chill values starting in the teens in the morning.

Wind Chill Value at 7am and 2pm.

I do not see a need to drip the faucets. Remember, the wind chill is a calculation for how it feels on our skin (including our pets). It’s not a calculation for our pipes or cars.

Wind chill=35.74 + 0.6215T – 35.75 (V^0.16) + 0.4275T (V^0.16).
T: Temperature
V: Wind Speed

Friday afternoon the wind should be from the north at 10-15 mph. In the evening, we will see wind speeds from the northwest at 5-10 mph. The high temperature should be near 40 degrees. If you have plans to go out Friday night, get ready for temperatures to feel like they are in the 20s once again.

The wind should decrease in speed this weekend, but we’ll still be cold. The annual Santa Flight is Saturday from 10 to 11:50 a.m. Santa will make his way across the Hampton Roads cities. If you are going to go to your favorite spot to see him fly overhead, it will be a chilly day.

The long-term forecast looks wet, with rain coming next week. Possible rain Monday, then a better chance for rainfall starting on Wednesday. We could get a good soaking of rainfall from that storm system. Stay tuned for updates.
