‘It’s just sad to see a loss of life’: Person dead after shooting, crash in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police responding to a vehicle crash at the intersection of Fort Lane and Crawford Parkway late Friday found a man who had been shot and killed, along with a heavily-damaged vehicle that flipped upside down and had crashed into a power pole and tree.

Portsmouth Police said the incident happened just before 11 p.m. When they arrived at the crash site, police said they found a man who’d been shot and had fatal gunshot wounds, and he died at the scene.

The man was identified Tuesday by police as Raymond Lateef Martin, 47.

Police are still investigating whether or not the person who died was driving the vehicle, a piece of which was found more than 70 feet from the site of the crash. Several power poles and a tree were damaged. As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dominion Energy reported at least 73 customers were without power.

Ryan Davidson, a Portsmouth resident, spoke with 10 On Your Side about what he and his wife witnessed Friday night.

“It was not a pretty sight,” he said. “Wife heard a bang, I came down, car’s upside down. You could see the trash cans. Took out the trees. A lot of ruckus.”

It’s something Davidson said is especially sad to see so soon after Thanksgiving.

“It’s just sad to see a loss of life, especially around the holidays,” he said.

Portsmouth Police’s Major Crime Unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Portsmouth Police Investigations Bureau at 757-393-8536 or call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
