SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After a busy weekend, fire crews across Hampton Roads are reminding residents of some fire safety tips.
“As the temperatures decrease, as they are doing now, the use of heating devices increases — space heaters and chimneys,” said Suffolk Assistant Fire Chief Dimitri Wilson.
Before you plug in your space heater or turn on the fireplace, Wilson advised to take precaution.
“Starts with inspections,” Wilson said. “It’s highly important to get your chimney inspected every year. That inspection is going to identify cracks, leaks or a dangerous buildup of creosote within that chimney. These space heaters can draw up to 15 amps, so we don’t want to plug multiple [ones] in because those can increase the potential for overloading the circuit, which can cause a fire.”
You should always place space heaters on flat surfaces, at least three feet away from flammable items such as curtains and furniture. Also, remember to use dry aged wood when using your chimney.
Something else to protect yourself and home? Insurance.
“God forbid there’s a fire and you lose everything,” said State Farm agent Erin Zabel. “To have inadequate property coverage is a concern.”
Local insurance agents say this is a good time to review your coverage, whether you’re a homeowner or an apartment renter.
“Definitely call and make sure that your covered adequately,” Zabel said. “All questions are answered. You never want to be stuck in a spot where your paying for something you think you have and you don’t.”
If you suspect a fire, always call 911.
“Be proactive don’t hesitate to call us,” Wilson said.
Additional tips include ensuring you have a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home.
