NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The man who was initially arrested in Newport News for attacking a woman during a road rage incident in Las Vegas is refusing to return to Nevada.
Jose Soriano, 42, was caught on camera punching and kicking a woman in June. At one point, he was mistakenly released from Newport News, then recaptured in Northern Virginia.
Video of the road rage incident shows driver Sarah Goolsby being dragged out of her car after a minor fender bender in Las Vegas. She was beaten and dragged through the brush and in the median.
Prosecutors say the man who has been accused of doing it wants to stay in Virginia. He was identified and arrested in Newport News on Aug. 12. But a judge dismissed his case after authorities did not receive the proper paperwork for extradition from the Clark County District Attorney’s Office in Las Vegas.
Soriano was arrested again Oct. 2 in Sterling, according to court records. He is charged with being a fugitive from justice.
“We’ve obtained the governor’s warrant because Soriano refused to voluntarily return to Nevada, which requires us to go through a process of obtaining a governor’s warrant, which we’ve done, which has been forwarded to the state of Virginia,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “We’re just waiting for them to contact us that the paperwork is complete so we can go pick him up. I just want to get the ball rolling and just get it over with.”
“I appreciate the efforts on their end, because you know, mistakes happen, but you make them right and you figure it out,” Sarah Goolsby said.
When Soriano returns to Las Vegas, he will face five charges, including three counts of battery, one count of destroying property and one felony count of coercion with force or threat of force, according to court documents.
