According to officials, two males entered Trantwood Elementary School through a hatch in the roof early Thursday morning. The suspects were tampering with items throughout the school when they were then confronted by a teacher in her classroom. This is near North Great Neck Road.

Shortly after being confronted, they were both seen leaving the school with two items, police said.

Officers used surveillance footage from the school to identify the vehicle the suspects left in, and tracked it to the residence of 19-year-old Alexander Mausser.

Mausser was then arrested and charged with burglary, assault on a law enforcement officer and urinating in public, police said. A spokesperson said he kneed the officer trying to arrest him.

The second suspect has yet to be identified, but he was seen wearing a blue flannel jacket with a gray hoodie the morning of the incident.

The school sent a response to parents following the incident, which can be read in full below:

Good morning, Trantwood Elementary families,

We want to make you aware that the school delayed opening this morning as the Virginia Beach Police Department and Office of Security and Emergency Management investigated a report of suspicious people inside the school.

Buses were held in the parking lot until the situation was resolved. We swiftly got the “all clear” from law enforcement and students were allowed in the building.

Instruction is continuing as normal. Parents and students may see additional police patrols around the neighborhood today.

Thank you for your continued support of Trantwood Elementary School.
