Safety and health tips as temperatures continue to drop

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Temperatures are staying low for the majority of the week, with most of the viewing area in the middle of a cold streak. Whether you are inside or outside, the drop in temperatures effects many people.

To keep your house warm, use safe sources of alternative heat like a space heater or fireplace, but keep it away from flammable objects.

When temperatures start to drop, a big tip is to let water drip from your faucets. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate to the plumbing. If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, it might be a frozen pipe. Apply heat until the water pressure is back to normal. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, the area is not accessible or it cannot be thawed, call a plumber.

When it comes to your health, according to the CDC, cold weather puts an extra strain on your heart. If you have a health condition like heart disease or high blood pressure, follow the doctor’s advice and avoid doing any hard work in the cold.

If you go outside, make sure to dress in layers and pick fabrics that hold more body heat.

“I put on extra layers of clothes,” said Reginald Ruffin Jr., who was out walking his dog.

When it comes to driving, you still need to be cautious even if there isn’t inclement weather. If your car breaks down in the cold, staying in the car is the safest choice, especially if the roads are icy.

Never pour water on your windshield to remove ice; this can cause your windshields to shatter. Avoid getting gasoline or alcohol on your skin while de-icing or filling up your car; it can cause your body to lose heat.

And don’t forget about your furry friends! Know your pet’s outdoor limits and make sure they are warm during their walks.

Ruffin puts a coat on his beagle before they go outside.

“I would’ve stayed in bed today, but she wants to go out in this cold weather,” said Ruffin.

Another tip from the CDC is to not ignore shivering; it is an important sign that your body is losing heat. If it does not stop, it’s a sign to go inside.
