(KRON/WAVY) – Good news for the millions of drivers on American roads: Gas prices are falling. The national average for a gallon of gas has hit a three-year low, the American Automobile Association (AAA) recently announced.

As of Sunday, the national average cost for one gallon of regular gasoline sat at $3.01, according to AAA. That’s the lowest in more than three years, the automotive agency reports.

Meanwhile, in Hampton Roads, the average price of gas falls below the national average, at $2.80, a four cent drop from one week ago.

Ryan Adcock, AAA Tidewater Spokesperson said this puts the Hampton Roads region at a three-year low.

“The national average is tantalizingly close to falling below $3 a gallon, and it could happen in a few days,” Adcock said. “But 32 states, including Virginia, already have an average below or well below $3. Of all the metro areas in Virginia, Hampton Roads has the lowest gas price average coming in at $2.80 reaching a three-year low.”
