HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — High school football playoffs are nearing the climax, as state championships are right around the corner. On Friday, four area schools will represent Class 5 in the region championships in regions A and B.
Starting in Region A, it’s a Beach District matchup between two powerhouses who have been on a collision course to see each other in this exact spot. Top-seeded Green Run (12-0) hosts Salem (10-2) at Green Run High School.
In October, these two teams met at Salem, with the Stallions running away with a 40-18 win after a dominant second-half performance. Both teams know that a state semifinal bid is at stake, and are pumped for the opportunity to hoist region gold.
“We set out to get to this point,” said Green Run head coach Brandon Williams. “This is when we went home last year. We didn’t obtain our goal. We don’t have anything to be happy about. Our goal is to win this Friday.”
The Sun Devils, however, know Green Run has eliminated them the past two seasons and seek to prevent that from happening again.
“We can talk about the game now because we’re here,” said Salem head coach Mark Hall III. “We have the 1-0 mentality, but now that we’re here, our focus is on Green Run. The guys are aware that Green Run is the team that’s eliminated us the past two years. Our focus is to win this regional championship.”
In the 5B Region championship, Maury (13-0) will try for its eighth-consecutive region title when the Commodores play 11-1 King’s Fork.
Maury has outscored its opponents by an average of 50 points-per-game, and the Commodores are loaded with talented players who will play college at programs such as Clemson, Indiana, South Carolina and Maryland.
Commodores head coach Dyrii McCain is hoping to guide them to their second-straight title, and nothing else is acceptable.
“Just trying to take care of the game after Thanksgiving and get to Dec. 14,” McCain said. “Not going to be satisfied with a win on Friday night because the bigger goal is what we are chasing.”
Friday’s region title tilt with be the first meeting between the Commodores and King’s Fork.
The Bulldogs lone blemish was a 27-12 setback against district rival and Class 6 power Oscar Smith.
A lot of people are expecting Maury to win and advance to the state semifinals, and for good reason.
The Commodores were really only challenged in their season-opener against Maryland state champions Wise High School.
“I would definitely say we’re the underdogs because the program has dominated our area the last couple of years.” said King’s Fork coach Anthony Joffrion. “We’re just excited to go against this team that’s well-coached. We’re well-coached, too. Just excited for the opportunity to go out there and play.”
