Navy uniforms to honor local squadron at rivalry Army game

Navy Football unveils its Jolly Rogers-themed uniform for the 2024 Army-Navy Game.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Navy Midshipmen will be wearing special new uniforms for the highly anticipated annual matchup against the Army West Point Black Knights.

The Navy partnered with Under Armour to create special edition jerseys that pay homage to the “Jolly Rogers” squadron (VFA-103), which is based out of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.

The 125th Army-Navy Game is Dec. 14, 2024 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

According to a news release from the Navy, “The Jolly Rogers were established in 1943 and are the most lethal and history-rich squadron in all of Naval Aviation and continue to exemplify the traditions and excellence of professionalism of the United States Navy.  Their tagline is Fear the Bones and their callsign is Victory.”

It goes on to say that the Skull and Crossbones have become “the most recognized and feared insignia in the world.”

Fast forward to recent history, the Jolly Rogers left Norfolk on deployment in August 2022 and returned in April 2023. And earlier this year, in April, the crew of VFA-103 deployed to the Southern Seas. They were gone until July 2024, working with partner nations in SOUTHCOM.

This is the second time the Navy football team has honored the Jolly Rogers with a nod on their uniforms, but it has been decades. In 1962, the Midshipmen wore a Jolly Rogers-inspired helmet design.
