HRBT Expansion Project celebrates World Tunnel Day

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project is celebrating World Tunnel Day with the opening of a new welcome center.

The former Visitor Center in Ocean View is now a learning and community meeting place where community members can learn more about the history of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnels. The facility will serve as an educational and learning center for the expansion project.

The center features a 10-foot model of Mary, the tunnel boring machine.

The center also houses a model of the project’s slurry treatment plant as well as tributes to NASA pioneers Mary Jackson and Katharine Johnson, for whom the tunnel boring machine and slurry plant are named.

Also featured are artifacts uncovered during project excavations, photos of the tunnels past and present and a conference room.

The public is invited to an open house for the HRBT Welcome Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4.
